13+ entry and pre-tests: a parent's guide
Many senior independent schools admit at 13+ (Year 9). Selection often starts years earlier, with a pre-test and interview in Year 6 or Year 7 leading to a conditional offer.
Some schools then ask for Common Entrance or their own papers in Year 8. Others no longer use Common Entrance.
The pre-test stage
Usually the ISEB Common Pre-Test or the school's own online reasoning test, covering English, maths, verbal and non-verbal reasoning.
Where Pass Masters fits
We cover Year 3 to Year 7: the years that build the reasoning and core skills pre-tests look for. We don't teach Year 8 Common Entrance subjects.
When should we start preparing for 13+?
Most families focus in Year 5 and Year 6, before the pre-test, with steady practice rather than intensive cramming.
